October Knit-ins to raise awareness about the period of PURPLE crying – Oct. 1st & 15th 2011

Way to go Victoria knitters! You contributed 27 knitted purple baby caps to support the Click For Babies campaign! The caps are on their way to BC Children’s Hospital and will be given to babies born in British Columbia during the month of November to raise awareness about the period of PURPLE crying.

Launch of “Suzie’s Sourdough Circus” – September 11th, 2011

Both author Kathy Sager and illustrator Eliska Liska were on hand to read and sign copies of their amazing new book. In addition, everyone got to enjoy the magic of sourdough first hand as Kathy brought a bunch of home-made sourdough cakes and loaves of bread! Huge thank-you’s to Kathy, Eliska, Annie from Harbour Publishing, and everyone who joined us for this great event!

Tall Tales Books turns Two Years Old! – August 20th, 2011

Our little store turned two years old this month! To mark this milestone we held a superhero-themed birthday party with storytime, face painting, balloon animals, cake, and a superhero craft. It was truly a special occasion:  not only were we celebrating the store’s second birthday, but celebrating all the heroes in the community who got us to this point as well!

Thank you to Shoshana our wonderful storyteller, Par-T-Perfect Victoria for the facepainting and balloon animals, and to everyone who came out to help us celebrate!

“Bon Voyage” Event – April 16th, 2011

We had a great turn-out to the Bon Voyage event where we bid farewell to four local Victoria authors as they prepared to travel across Canada for the TD Canadian Children’s Book Week tour. All four authors were on hand to read from their latest novels and sign copies for those in attendance: Julie Lawson with “Ghosts of the Titanic“, Penny Draper with “Ice Storm“, Robin Stevenson with “Outback“, and Michelle Mulder with “Out of the Box“.

“Out of the Box” Book Launch – April 9th, 2011

We had a great turn-out to the event to meet Michelle and hear her read from her book. Local musician Jonathan Goldman was also on hand playing the bandoneón, an Argentine instrument that plays a large role in the novel. Thanks to Michelle, her family, Jonathan, and Orca Book Publishers for putting on such a great event!

“Shut Up and Eat” signing – July 17th, 2010

Pinkalicious Day – June 26th, 2010Pinkalicious School Rules

We had a very pink day at Tall Tales Books as we celebrated the release of the brand new Pinkalicious books: “Pinkalicious and the Pink Drink” & “Pinkalicious School Rules!“!

Pinkalicious and the Pink DrinkEveryone had a great time making their own crowns and wands, enjoying pink lemonade, and a bunch of lucky kids received free cupcakes from Pink Sugar Cupcakery! We also raised a bunch of money for Margaret Jenkins Elementary School to help them purchase a new playground!

Comic Book Workshop with Mike Deas! – March 20th, 2010

 

 

DeasLocal Graphic Novel artist Mike Deas led a really cool workshop for lucky budding comic book artists and covered character design, composition, perspective, and storytelling in the comic book medium! Mike is the artist for the very popular Graphic Guide Adventures series which includes Wild Ride, Ramp Rats, Soccer Sabotage, Media Meltdown, and the upcoming Food Fight!

“Island Kids” Book Launch – February 20th, 2010

 

 

Island Kids CoverThe launch of local author Tara Saracuse’s new book “Island Kids” was a massive success! We estimated that about 100 people came to the event, over 40 of which were kids (including a Girl Guide troop and a kid’s book club)! Tara did two incredible readings from her book and some of the “kids” whose stories are in the book were also in attendance! A big thanks to Tara, her family, and Brindle and Glass Publishing for all their help and for putting on such an amazing event at our store! If you haven’t had a chance to see Tara’s book yet, come by the store to check it out and support local talent!

Salvation Army Charity Drive – December 20th, 2009Salvation Army

Our “Under the Giving Tree” Salvation Army charity drive was a success! Everyone involved was able to collect enough clothes, toiletries, and food to prepare 30 Christmas care packages for needy men, women, and children in our community as well as three boxes of extra items! A huge thanks to the families of Cloverdale School for collecting so many donations as well as Ms. Patterson’s Grade 5 class for preparing the care package “reindeer”!

We are thrilled to announce that Saturday, May 15, Orca Book Publishers will launch three (that’s right, THREE) of its spring 2010 titles at Tall Tales Books!. Robin Stevenson, Sylvia Olsen and Mike Deas will be on hand to sign copies of their latest books for readers ages 7-12!
